Donald Trump's military parade commemorating the Army's 250th anniversary reportedly began half an hour earlier than planned due to rain.

The parade, which was requested by Trump, coincides with his 79th birthday.

Just hours before tanks and troops were set to rumble through Washington, 'No Kings' rallies kicked off across the US in defiance of Trump's policies.

President Donald Trump and wife Melania were all smiles at the military parade.

The US military said the parade would only cost between $US25 million ($38.5m) and $69 million because several corporations were sponsoring the celebration.

They include the cryptocurrency firm Coinbase, technology firm Palantir and UFC founder Dana White.

They turned towards him and raised their right hands as the president swore them in with an oath.

The soldiers then repeated the oath back to him.
