At least five injured in train crash in Germany

At least five people have been injured after two trains collided in Germany.

A passenger train and freight train collided on the track near a train station in the town of Meerbusch, 15 minutes outside of Dusseldorf, at about 6am AEDT.

Emergency crews are at the scene working to free passengers from the wreckage.

The Meerbusch fire department said access to the train and passengers has been made "difficult by the torn-off contact wire of the overhead contact line, which poses a risk of electric shock to persons outside the train".

Power to the train line is set to be cut off for a short period so as to help free the people on board.

Approximately 150 people were on board the passenger train at the time of the crash.
