A driver has desperately waved down another motorist as smoke billowed from his shredded tyres after a truck unknowingly dragged his vehicle for more than six kilometres.

Brian Steimke was travelling along a Californian highway when he saw a maroon sedan being hauled along behind a semi-trailer after an accident on Thursday.

He pulled out his phone and started recording the bizarre sight as the driver reached his hand out and beeped his horn to try and alert the unaware truck driver.

Mr Steimke drove up beside the distressed driver who shouted "he's not stopping" through the window as he passed.

The truck driver comes to a halt shortly after, with passing motorists getting out to join Mr Steimke in assessing the damage.

He approached the driver and asked why he didn’t stop.

"Why were you driving so far? The guys on the end of your car," he asked the driver.

"I didn't even know it," the truckie responded.

"What do you mean you didn’t even know it – he is on your truck."

The maroon sedan's front two wheels had been lifted off the road and the bonnet was dented but the truck appeared undamaged.

No one was injured.
