Hot air balloon tightrope stunt fails

One by one they ventured gingerly out onto the tightrope, strung between two hot air balloons that hovered above the cloud line a few thousand feet in the air.

And one by one they stumbled and fell, plunging into a freefall that sparked raucous laughter from their watching comrades.

None of the French daredevils — who call themselves Skyliners — ever made it all the way across, but all of them landed safely thanks to the parachutes strapped to their backs.

Filmmaker Sebastien Montaz-Rosset recorded the stunt and posted it on Vimeo three days ago.

The video includes first-person footage captured by a camera attached to one tightrope walker's head, showing the view as he looked down at his wobbly feet with a distant patchwork of fields below.

The video also records the moment he and another walker, dressed in white and carrying an umbrella, fall off the rope.

It is not clear exactly how many Skyliners attempted the feat.

Skyliners describe their passions as "highlining, basejumping, mountaineering and much more."

Montaz-Rosset has been following and filming the group for several years and recently released a film about them.

The video ends with the group vowing to try the feat again.
