Former UK tabloid editor Andy Coulson has gone on trial in Scotland accused of perjury.

Coulson is charged with lying under oath in the 2010 trial against former Scottish MP Tommy Sheridan. He denied the allegations in court on Friday, pleading not guilty.

The 47-year-old Coulson edited the now-defunct, Rupert Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid between 2003 and 2007. He is accused of lying about his knowledge of the tabloid's practice of eavesdropping on the voicemail messages of celebrities, politicians, athletes and others in the public eye.
