Aussie uni student’s fatal fall in London to be probed by coroner

The death of a Brisbane law student in London will be investigated by a coroner, representatives of the young man’s family have confirmed.

Fletcher Beasley, 21, died after falling from the Victoria Embankment in central London, early on the morning of June 25.

The London Ambulance Service said Beasley died at the scene.

Beasley was a fourth-year Business and Law student at the Queensland University of Technology, and worked for tax specialist law firm West Garbutt as a research assistant, according to his LinkedIn page.

In a statement, Beasley’s parents Katrina and Matt called him “our adored son” and “deeply loved and cherished”.

“Funny, loyal, curious about the world, and always full of warmth, he lived a balanced life, playing sport, running, travelling and having fun,” they said.

“Fletcher was deeply generous, selfless and community minded. His family knows he would have wanted to help others in any way he could.”

An online fundraiser set up for the Beasley family has as of this morning raised $100,000.

A statement posted by friends of the family confirmed the London coroner had opened an inquest into Beasley’s death.

They also announced the establishment of the Fletcher Beasley Fund.

“The fund will support the ongoing investigation into Fletcher’s death and support the Beasley family and close friends to help rebuild their lives and to bring Fletcher home,” the statement read.

“Just as Fletcher would have wanted to help and support others, this fund has been established to support Fletcher’s friends who were with him in London at the time.”

The family was “overwhelmed” by the support they had received, an update to the fundraiser said.

The fund will also “support others facing similarly difficult situations”.

“It is impossibly unfair that he has been taken after only 21 years, however he lived a beautiful, but far too short life,” Katrina and Matt Beasley said.

“His loss leaves an immeasurable absence, but his warmth, kindness and love will continue to shape the lives of all who were lucky enough to know him.”
