Two pilots have been killed after an Indonesian military jet crashed during an aerobatic display at an airshow.

Witnesses reported seeing the KAI T-50 Golden Eagle light attack aircraft spinning out of control before crashing into the ground at an air force base complex near Adi Sujipto Airport in Yogyakarta on the main island of Java, AP reports.

Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed instantly and a crash investigation team has been sent to the site.

Video show by witnesses shows the plane plummeting to the ground before large plumes of black smoke rise into the air.

The incident happened during the second day of the air show, which is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Air Force Flight School in Yogyakarta.

The US-South Korean made trainer aircraft is one of 16 planes purchased by the Indonesian Air Force last year.
