TV anchor quits on air

Russia has been condemned by its own Kremlin-funded news service for a second time this week after a news anchor quit live on air in protest of the country’s actions in Ukraine.

Liz Wahl, an American anchor working for Russia Today (RT), declared that she would no longer work for the network during a broadcast from the station's Washington DC bureau.

The resignation comes two days after another anchor in the same studio, Abby Martin, condemned Russia's military intervention in the Crimea.

Wahl cited the fact her grandparents had come to America as Hungarian refugees fleeing the Soviets as a moral and ethical challenge she was facing when working for RT.

"I cannot be part of a network funded by the Russian government that whitewashes the actions of Putin," Wahl said straight to the camera.

"I'm proud to be an American and believe in disseminating the truth and that is why, after this newscast, I'm resigning."

In a statement released after Martin's condemnation earlier this week RT said they would not reprimand the anchor but would look to relocate her to Crimea.

"In her comment Ms Martin also noted that she does not possess a deep knowledge of reality of the situation in Crimea," a spokesperson said.

"We'll be sending her to Crimea to give her an opportunity to make up her own mind from the epicentre of the story," the statement read.

Despite the statement, Martin said she would not be going to Crimea.
