A clever turtle avoids being eaten by tiger shark

Rare footage has been released of a turtle that narrowly escapes the jaws of a tiger shark by using two clever strategies.

The video, which was shot off the Cocos Islands near the coast of Costa Rica, shows the clever reptile turning on its side to ward off the shark.

As the turtle shows off its shell to the shark it becomes a shield for the ingenious turtle, as the shark cannot open its jaw wide enough to grab it vertically.

The shark temporarily retreats and then proceeds to go in for a second attempt; however the turtle is one step ahead of the prowling predator.

To help confuse the shark even more, the turtle swims in tight circles around the giant fish as the shark is incapable of closing in.

The cunning turtle evades its hunter and can now carry on with its day in the sea.
