A member of Donald Trump's security team has been filmed brutally choke-slamming a photographer to the ground at a rally for the Republican presidential candidate.

TIME photographer Chris Morris was in the crowd at a rally in Radford, Virginia when he stepped out of the press area to photograph protesters who interrupted Trump during a speech.

A Secret Service agent tells Mr Morris to move back, to which he says, "f—k you".

The agent then grabs the photographer's throat and throws him to the ground in a chokehold.

Once on the ground, Mr Morris kicks his legs out at the agent as he tries to restrain him.

Police are now investigating the incident.

TIME Magazine said Mr Morris, a veteran journalist known for his war photography, was "remorseful" for playing a part in escalating the scuffle.

"We are relieved that Chris is feeling OK, and we expect him to be back at work soon," the magazine said in a statement.

A few minutes before the clash Trump reportedly announced he wants to "change laws to make the press be honest".

He is the only presidential candidate whose rallies feature a designated 'pen' journalists are not allowed to leave.

Other candidates have areas specifically for the media, but reporters are free to mingle in the crowd to interview people, VICE reports.

The protest that interrupted the rally was by members of Black Lives Matter, which aims to highlight the number of African-Americans killed at the hands of law enforcement in the US.

Trump yelled for security to "get them out", calling them "the enemy".
