Trump found it ‘tough to watch’ Paralympics

US President Donald Trump is coming under fire for a strange remark about the Paralympics where he said it was "a little tough to watch too much".

The President was speaking at an event with Team USA Olympians and Paralympians at the White House.

"What happened with the Paralympics was so incredible and so inspiring to me. And I watched — it's a little tough to watch too much, but I watched as much as I could,” he said.

The US brought home 13 gold medals and 36 medals at the 2018 Paralympics, more than any other country.

Trump did not clarify why it was “tough to watch too much” of the Paralympics and many on social media have taken the comments at face value, reacting negatively.

One Twitter user wrote: “The man couldn’t be sensitive or respectful if his life depended on it.”

"This is shocking behaviour from the man who openly and brazenly mocked Serge Kovaleski's arthrogryposis during the primaries," wrote another user, referring to a speech wherein Trump made fun of a reporter's physical disabilities.

While it is standard for the White House to honour Olympians and Paralympians after the games, fewer athletes attended this year’s event than when President Obama held the same event in 2014.

According to USA Today, only 150 athletes attended Trump’s ceremony while in 2014 around 200 attended Obama’s event.
