‘Real Captain America’ filmed pulling couple to safety from burning car

A US Army captain has become a national hero after footage emerged of him pulling a couple to safety from a burning car wreck.

Steve Voglezon was going to the mall with his girlfriend in Chatham County, North Carolina, when they came across a head-on collision with one car already having burst into flames.

Emergency services were not yet on the scene when Capt Voglezon smashed in the car's front windows with a fire extinguisher.

He dragged one man to safety, before returning to pull the man's wife free.

All people involved in the crash survived.

Capt Voglezon has even picked up a new nickname after it emerged he was wearing a superhero shirt at the time.

However, the "real Captain America" has downplayed his actions.

"I was just in the right place at the right time," he said.

He said people acted like heroes every day.

"This was just caught on camera," he said.
