A truck driver has narrowly avoided being crushed by a wayward block of stone after trying to load the tray while parked downhill.

Video of the undated incident shows a worker in an excavator attempt to shift the block, which sits unrestrained on the back of the truck.

Another worker standing on the tray is dwarfed by the sheer size of the rock.

Suddenly the block shifts and continues to slide into the back of the driver's cab.

The force of the impact throws the man out the door, but he manages to hold on, as the rock skims past before tumbling down the side of the hill.

The workers were left holding their heads in their hands as they helplessly watched the load gain speed towards a road below.

It is not known if anyone was injured in the video.
