Demonic possession has been blamed after a Canadian woman behaving bizarrely on a train lashed out at a Pringle-eating passenger for no apparent reason.

Footage of the violent clash was filmed on an Edmonton train on Thursday and has since gone viral because of the antagonist's unusual behaviour.

The video shot by another traveller shows a woman pulling at her own hair, yanking a chain around her neck and writhing around on her seat in an agitated fashion.

The odd antics then suddenly turn violent as the woman lets out a growl before lunging at a man eating chips next to her.

"She's possessed," a passenger yells as the woman grabs the unsuspecting man's throat before punching him in the face and pulling his hair.

The man then gets up and the pair exchange pushes before the woman kicks the man and transit officers subdue them.

Spokeswoman for the City of Edmonton Cheryl Oxford said the pair were both interviewed and released on the same day.

They both received violation tickets for fighting in public which carry a $500 fine.
