The Pentagon has claimed one of ISIL's top commanders has been killed in an airstrike.

Tariq Bin Al-Tahar, also known as Tariq Bin Tahar Al-Awni Al-Harzi, was killed on June 16 by a coalition airstrike in Shaddadi, Syria, the Washington Times reported.

Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis said Al-Tahar's death would damage ISIL's recruitment and logistics.

"As an ISIL member, he worked to raise funds and recruit and facilitate the travel of fighters for the terrorist organization," Captain Davis said in a statement.

"Al-Harzi also worked to provide materiel to ISIL by procuring and shipping weapons from Libya to Syria for ISIL."

His brother, Ali Awni Al-Harzi, also fought for the extremist group and was involved in the 2011 attack on the US embassy in Libya.

He was killed the day before Al-Tahar in a separate airstrike.
