The mystery of Super Bowl champion Tom Brady’s missing jersey has been solved, after it was located on an unlikely holder.

The NFL said the New England Patriots quarterback’s winning shirt from the recent Super Bowl LI and another garment from the 2015 Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks were found on a member of the international media.

Both shirts were found in Mexico, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo announced overnight.

Their authenticity is being tested.

"The items were found in the possession of a credentialed member of the international media. Due to the ongoing investigation, we would refer any additional questions to the FBI,” the NFL said in a statement.

After the historic comeback win, for which Brady was announced MVP, he asked reporters if the jersey shows up on eBay: “somebody let me know”.

The jersey is valued at $US500,000 ($AU648,550), and the Associated Press reported the an executive from a Mexican tabloid, Diario La Prensa, was “involved” in the robbery.
