Tributes pour in for Tina Turner after music icon dies aged 83

Tributes are pouring in from around the world for rock icon Tina Turner after she died at home aged 83.

The legendary singer sold more than 200 million records and won 12 Grammys in a career that spanned more than five decades and produced a catalogue of hit songs including River Deep (Mountain High), What's Love Got To Do With It and The Best.

Her death after a long illness has prompted a deluge of praise and tributes for the woman dubbed the "Queen of rock'n'roll".

Mick Jagger

The Rolling Stones frontman said Turner was "inspiring, warm, funny and generous".

Anthony Albanese

The prime minister spoke about the star's death in a radio appearance with WSFM.

"She was a legend who overcame domestic violence and trauma," he said.

"She provided a soundtrack to our lives. I think here in Australia, Simply The Best was such a soundtrack for those who loved rugby league as well.

"She had so many good songs, though that would be my pick, but Proud Mary was fantastic, What's Love Got to Do With It, she had so many great hits."

Richard Wilkins

Nine Entertainment Editor Wilkins was unstinting in his praise.

"When she walked on that stage, she absolutely owned it," Wilkins said.

"She just had that presence, she was just a force of nature and the amazing voice, the pitch, the phrasing, the pizazz - she just delivered in spades."

John Quayle

Quayle was the boss of the then-Australian Rugby League when Turner came on board for her iconic partnership with the sport.

"She was just so wonderful with the players. She made everyone relax," he told Today.

"That final scene which people look at that's on the (Sydney) Harbour Bridge, she was up there before any tours were held, dancing with no safety gear whatsoever.

"She just loved to do it and that's how good she was."

"Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like."

"I will miss a great friend, whom I have also had the pleasure to dress many times.

"In life, she was like she was onstage - pure energy.

"I am deeply saddened."
