A German company has developed a new Willy Wonka-style elevator where passengers only have to wait a matter of seconds for the next lift.

Reminiscent of the elevator featured in the Willy Wonka movies, ThyssenKrupp's invention is the first cable-free elevator.

The company's chief executive Andreas Schierenback said the "era of rope dependent elevator" was over.

The elevator system, nicknamed MULTI, moves cabins using magnetic force.

"Per year, New York City office workers spend a cumulative amount of 16.6 years waiting for elevators, and 5.9 years in the elevators," he said.

"This data provides how imperative it is to increase the availability of elevators."

It is designed for "near-constant access" so passengers only have to wait between 15-30 seconds.

"As the nature of building constructions evolve, it is also necessary to adapt elevator systems to better suit the requirements of buildings and high volumes of passengers," Mr Schierenback.
