'The Partridge Family' actor David Cassidy hospitalised

The Partridge Family star David Cassidy has been hospitalised in Florida.

Cassidy, aged 67, is "now conscious" and "surrounded by family" at the Fort Lauderdale hospital, his publicist Jo-Ann Geffen told CNN yesterday.

The actor and singer was rushed to hospital three days ago and requires a liver transplant.

Cassidy, who starred as Keith Partridge in the 1970s TV series, told People magazine in February that he was battling dementia. 

He said his grandfather and mother had also suffered from the disease. 

Cassidy, who also enjoyed hits in the 1970s like How Can I Be Sure, said he had decided to stop touring this year. 

"I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I've been without any distractions," he said.

"I want to love. I want to enjoy life."

The news of his dementia came days after he struggled to remember song lyrics at a performance in California. 

He said he would conclude his five-decade career this year after a few concerts, and added that his arthritis made performing difficult.

Cassidy has had numerous personal problems in the decades following his debut, ranging from substance abuse to bankruptcy.

In 2014, a judge sentenced Cassidy - who divorced his third wife last year - to three months in rehab and five years' probation for drink-driving. 

Cassidy is the stepson of actress and fellow The Partridge Family star, Shirley Jones.

The Partridge Family is a US musical-sitcom that ran from 1970 to 1974.

Cassidy played the eldest of five children of a widowed mother - played by Jones- and the show also starred Danny Bonaduce, Susan Dey and Suzanne Crough, with shorter appearances from Brian Forster and Dave Madden.
