Terrifying footage shows ferry sinking with hundreds clinging to the hull

Horrifying footage has been captured of a sinking ferry off the coast of Indonesia, with at least 29 souls lost.

Passengers in life jackets can be seen clinging to the doomed KM Lestari Maju as it lists and heads below the surface just off Sulawesi province.

Others can be seen swimming away from the ferry, which ran aground near the Selayar islets after encountering bad weather.

People on a rescue boat throw lifts buoys into the water - but some passengers can be seen swimming towards the stricken vessel.

At least 69 passengers have been rescued, but 41 are still missing.

Around 150 vehicles also went into the choppy waters.

Some of the survivors were heard crying "God is great."

Maritime accidents are common in Indonesia, where boats are often overcrowded and rules are not always enforced.

On June 18, nearly 200 people drowned when an overcrowded ferry sank minutes after it set sail in bad weather on a volcanic lake in North Sumatra province.
