A 16-year-old girl has collapsed and died moments after finishing a half-marathon in the US.

Cameron Gallagher crumpled to the ground after crossing the finishing line at Virginia Beach's Shamrock Half Marathon on Sunday.

The teenager was rushed to hospital, after suffering an apparent cardiac arrest, but doctors were unable to revive her.

"Her last act of life was an accomplishment," her father David Gallagher told WTVR.

Gallagher was described as an active teen and spent nine weeks training for the half-marathon with her best friend Abby Donelson.

Donelson was by Gallagher's side when she collapsed.

"I went to hug her," said Donelson. "We were walking away with our arms around each other and she said 'I'm going to pass out.' And then she kind of went down."

Before her death, Cameron had been organizing a $5000 fundraiser to promote awareness about suicide.

Friends say that the teen’s 'Speaking Up 5K' will continue in her memory.
