A US teenager claims she was suspended for saying "bless you" after a classmate sneezed.

According to the website mom.com Dyer County High School student Kendra Turner was suspended last week after breaking a class rule that bans the expression, WMC Action News 5 reports.

"(My teacher) said that we're not going to have godly speaking in her class and that's when I said we have a constitutional right," Kendra said.

The Year 12 student says when she defended her actions she was sent to the principal.

Kendra sat out the remainder of the period in an in-school suspension.

The school claims Kendra shouted "bless you" across the room and was a distraction to the class, according to the student's parents.

Critics have argued the ban encroaches on students' faith.

Kendra's classmates showed their support on Tuesday by wearing homemade "bless you" shirts.

The school is yet to comment on the incident.
