Teen runs over dad at demolition derby

An evening of consensual automotive destruction took a dangerous twist when a teenage driver lost control of his car and slammed into a crowd of spectators including his own father.

The accident occurred at Pennsylvania's Mountain Springs Arena on Saturday night during a Youth Class race for drivers aged between 14 and 16, local TV station WFMZ reports.

Chrissy Stout, who filmed the chaos from the stands said the smash was a "complete shock".

"Everyone was screaming, it was crazy," she said.

"I was in shock... it really was a shock, and I didn't expect to see all that."

Her footage shows the teen's car receive a hit from behind when it is pushed out of the entrance to the racing area.

The out of control car immediately ploughs into a group of spectators, hitting and running over some of them, including the driver's father who later underwent surgery for a broken ankle.

The driver said his accelerator became stuck after he was rammed.

The arena's owner Rich Miller said in his 41 years of running the venue he had never seen anything like what he witnessed on Saturday.

"We never want to see anything like this, but it's just something that is unfortunate," he said.

"It happened and it could have been a lot worse. Maybe for the youth classes we will have to start blocking that off, but I think it could have been a little bit of inexperience."
