Sydney man gets Opal chip implanted in his hand

A Sydney man will never lose his Opal card again after having its chip implanted in his hand.

The man, whose legal name is Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow, is now able to tap on and off at train station barriers with just his left hand, ABC News reports.

"It gives me an ability that not everyone else has, so if someone stole my wallet I could still get home," he said.

Mr Meow-Meow had the chip in his Opal card cut down to 10mm by 6mm and covered in bio-compatible plastic before getting the device implanted by a piercing expert.

The bio-hacker already has two other implants in his hand and arm – including one to store his documents on.

He said he was still able to top up his Opal card online. But he admitted he sometimes had to tap on more than once and his hand needed to be 1cm from the reader.

Mr Meow-Meow also acknowledged the implant was in breach of Opal's terms of service, which prohibit tampering.

"It will be really interesting to see what happens when the first transit officer scans my arm," he said.
