Suarez banned 9 games, out of World Cup

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez is out of the World Cup after being handed a nine-match ban by football's world governing body FIFA.

FIFA banned the striker from all football activities for four months for biting an opponent at the World Cup, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament and the start of the upcoming Premier League season.

The ban also covers Uruguay's next nine international games, which goes beyond the next four months and rules him out of next year's Copa America.

FIFA also fined the Liverpool striker 100,000 Swiss francs ($A121,000).

The ban is effective immediately, meaning Suarez will miss Uruguay's round-of-16 game against Colombia on Saturday.

Suarez bit Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini during Uruguay's 1-0 win in the group stage.

Claudio Sulser, chairman of the FIFA disciplinary committee, says "such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch and particularly at the World Cup".

But the Uruguayan Football Association says it will appeal the punishment, which president Wilmar Valdez called "totally exaggerated".

Fellow footballers have continued to ridicule Suarez's now infamous bite on Chiellini.

Even Chiellini himself posted a picture of him grinning as a hotel maid bit his shoulder.

Brazil striker Fred meanwhile was snapped pretending to bite teammate Marcelo's arm in training and US comedian Will Ferrell turned up at a bar in Brazil where American fans were gathered and promised he would bite "every German player" in USA's game against Germany, before they lost 0-1.
