Stray tyre in head-on collision with car

A Russian motorist is lucky to still have his sight after a head-on collision with a stray tyre embedded windscreen glass in his face.

Rashid Pokrovsky, 32, was driving home on the Yekaterinburg dual ring road in central Russia recently when the tyre dislodged from an oncoming Soviet-era lorry.

Dashboard camera video captured by Albert Yefimov, who was tailing the truck, shows the heavy vehicle slump to the left as the tyre comes loose, narrowly missing a  bus before collecting Mr Pokrovsky's car.

"We were going at 80kph when the tyre came off," Mr Yefimov, 45, told The Mirror yesterday.

"I thought it was going to hit the bus but it hit the car behind who had no chance of braking or swerving to avoid it."

Mr Yefimov said he found a bloodied Mr Pokrovsky in shock.

"I ran over to help and saw that (the car's) front had been completely destroyed by the force of the impact," he said.

"Amazingly, the driver was okay, although he did have a lot of blood on his face and was completely shocked."

Mr Pokrovsky was taken to hospital where doctors surgically removed the countless pieces of glass from his face.

"He is extremely lucky that wasn't blinded or, worse, killed outright," a hospital spokesman said.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

The trucking company could face a fine of up to A$2000 if found to be using outdated or unroadworthy vehicles.
