A fever of a different kind is sweeping the Commonwealth Games village in Glasgow ahead of Wednesday’s opening ceremony – a nasty stomach bug.

Athletes have not been struck down by the virus yet, which has affected 53 staff at the village.

“It’s really just an awareness for the new people coming into the village,” Commonwealth Games chef de mission Steve Moneghetti told 9NEWS.

“It is isolated to the work force but you’ve got to be safe.”

The virus affects one million people in the UK every year.
