Solomon Islands rocked by 6.4-magnitude earthquake

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands just before 2pm today.

The quake was at a depth of 33km, and struck about 155km south-west of the town of Buala, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

"Strong shaking" was reported in Honiara, 179km south-east of the epicentre, with "horizontal swinging" in buildings also reported.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) tweeted shortly after the tremor, stating there was no tsunami threat to Australia.
