Sinkhole causes car chaos in China

A sinkhole caused traffic chaos in the Chinese city of Jinjiang on Thursday after it opened up in the middle of a busy junction and swallowed a car.

The four metre wide chasm opened up after a heavy goods vehicle passed over it causing the road's surface to collapse.

Moments later, traffic surveillance footage shows an unsuspecting driver of a white car almost driving into the hole.

He and his passenger both manage to clamber to safety before more of the road gives way, causing the car to tumble into the cavity.

The cause of the hole has been blamed on soil erosion beneath the tarmac.
