Sierra Leone celebrates Ebola-free status with viral dance video

Sierra Leone was officially declared Ebola-free earlier this month, and what better way to celebrate the fact than with a dance? Complete with full-body HAZMAT suits, of course.

November 7 marked the 42^nd day since anyone in the country was diagnosed with Ebola and the nation decided to hail the good news with a jubilant dance video captioned– “Bye Bye Ebola”.

“Thank God, it’s gone – a new day has come,” sings Sierra Leonean rapper Block Jones in the ‘viral’ video.

The feel-good clip features Sierra Leone’s President Ernest Bai Koroma, staff from the Ebola Treatment Centre, and even the military dancing in celebration of the end of the lethal outbreak.

While the “new day” has been welcomed with open arms across the country, it’s also a reminder of the 3955 lives lost in the fight against the disease.

“For us, Ebola is not over,” health care worker Yusuf Kamara said in a speech.

The recent epidemic was the deadliest outbreak since the virus was discovered in 1976, killing five times more people than all other times combined, according to the World Health Organisation.
