Siberian town freezes over after storm knocks out power and electricity

A town in Siberia has been covered in ice after temperatures dropped to -40C.

The small northern seaport town of Dudinka was left without water or electricity after a powerful storm hit the area two weeks ago.

Winds disabled power lines and cut off the city’s water supply, plunging 22,000 residents into an official state of emergency as huge icicles began appearing on the sides of apartment buildings, according to Russia Today.

Some of the astonishing images on social media show cars encased by ice on the streets, fresh drinking water being delivered and icicles creeping over window sills.

Despite local media reporting the hot water was running again on January 14, residents quickly took to social media to say the problem was not yet resolved, the Siberian Times reported.

Residents have been flocking to local gyms to take showers as the water pipes in their homes remain frozen.

Dudinka is located in Krasnoyarsk Krai, a territory in the middle of Siberia that borders the Arctic Ocean.
