Shoppers shocked to see birds loitering in and then looting supermarket meat aisle

Health Department authorities were reportedly left to remove 17 stray birds from a US supermarket, after a shopper filmed stray birds loitering in - and then looting - the meat aisle.

Rhonda Kitchen uploaded the video to Facebook on Sunday, then shared it with Western MA News.

The video raised concerns about Chicopee Walmart's hygiene practices and customer service.

"After the employee who came to collect the meat they were eating walked away, the birds came right back," Ms Kitchen wrote.

"The employees did nothing."

Fellow shopper Scott Conway told Western Mass News the sight of the birds tearing away at the packaged meat repulsed him.

"They were clustering around the hamburger and they were literally eating out of the packages," Mr Conway said.

Mr Conway claimed he alerted a Walmart employee about the issue, but his complaint was brushed off.

"As sad as it sounds, they made it seem like it was a normal thing... 'Yeah, they’re here'," he said.

Chicopee Health Department inspector Katie Cyr confirmed that 17 birds were removed and the meat was discarded.

A Walmart spokesperson told Mass Live that additional measures are in place to prevent birds from entering the store in the future.
