Shoppers horrified by $9.99-pound frozen raccoon in supermarket

A supermarket in the US was thrown under the spotlight recently after a dead raccoon was spotted on its shelves listed for sale.

As it turns out, the Metro Supermarket in Temple City, Los Angeles has been selling raccoon meat – fur, eyes, paws, teeth and all – for years.

The meat is a delicacy in China, they claimed.

But a recent complaint on social media saw word of the unconventional dish's sale spread far and wide.

Christina Dow was horrified to find the animal for sale and shared video she filmed of the see-through bag in which it was displayed.

"The way it's packaged in the store, it's so real, and it's so fresh, and you don't see chickens with their feathers and blood all over them, and their expression, with their tongue hanging out," Dow told CBS.

LA County Health Department officials paid a visit to the grocery store and the sale of the raccoons has reportedly ceased.

It is not clear whether they were forced to stop the practice by officials, who said the meat's distribution might be legal depending on where it came from.

The raccoon shared online was labelled "Fish Department" at $9.99 per pound (about A$5.80 per kilogram).
