Serena Williams to make tennis return in Australia

Serena Williams is set to step back onto the tennis court just months after giving birth to her daughter.

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley has confirmed the 23-time Grand Slam winner will "very likely" return to tennis in Melbourne for the Australian Open in January.

"She's got her visa, she's entered, she's practicing," he told the Herald Sun.

"There's no question she'll be ready in our view."

Williams, 36, has won the Australian Open seven times, including earlier this year while in the early weeks of pregnancy.

She gave birth to her first child, daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr, with her partner, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, in September.

Williams won this year's event while in the early weeks of pregnancy and is hoping to surpass Margaret Court's record of 24 Grand Slam titles.

"She wants to break a record that is Margaret Court's," Mr Tilley said.

"It would be a pretty significant accomplishment for her to be able to do that."

Williams has indicated on social media that she has already returned to training.
