Sea lions captured escaping killer whales

It is the stunning footage that shows nature at its most cruel; a group of sea lions tearing through the water in a desperate effort to escape a hungry pod of killer whales.

The dramatic video was captured by Travis Twizell, who was whale watching on a boat in British Columbia, Canada earlier this month.

As the water around the boat becomes choppy, the sea lions can be seen suddenly clamouring around the vessel and diving in and out of the water.

Then, as Mr Twizell pans his camera up, a pod of orcas appear, lurking in the distance as they close in on their prey.

Off camera a passenger says "this is scary", before a sudden spurt of water shoots up near the back of the boat.

"Woah," a man can be heard yelling, "he got her, he got her!", as one of the killer whales dives back below the surface.

"It was an incredibly impressive thing to witness," Mr Twizell said after returning to dry land.

It is believed the sea lions attempted to stay close to the boat in an ill-fated attempt to distract the killer whales.
