Schapelle Corby granted parole

Schapelle Corby has been granted parole, Indonesian officials have announced.

In a vague press conference, Justice Minister Amir Syamsuddin confirmed that Corby was one of more than a thousand applicants he considered for parole.

He would not say directly whether Corby would be freed, and stated that despite the attention her conviction has garnered, she would not be treated differently than any other prisoner.

Corby, who was convicted of smuggling marijuana into Bali in 2005, has spent nine years behind bars at Kerobokan prison.

Despite her parole being confirmed, the head of the jail said it is impossible for the Queensland woman to be set free today.

She will most likely be released on Monday.

More to come.
