Russian warships have fired on ISIS targets in Syria, destroying weapons and ammunitions depots.

Six cruise missiles were launched from two Russian frigates and a submarine from the Mediterranean Sea, the Defence Ministry said in a statement on Friday, CNN reports.

It did not confirm when the missiles were fired.

Turkey and Israel were reportedly informed before the attack - which was launched on various ISIS controlled command areas.

The ministry made no mention of the US also being kept apprised of the military operation.

It follows the downing of a Syrian jet by a US warplane.

The attack on the Syrian fighter resulted in the suspension of the de-confliction hotline between Russian and the US.

Russia has stated its airstrikes may have killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghadi, however, US officials told CNN that claim was not confirmed.
