Royal wedding: The trumpets that will be used on the big day

It’s a world class trumpet workshop in a location you’d never expect.

Just through the village of Sheriff Hutton, north of York, you come to a sign saying “farm track”.

Drive up the gravel road and there’s a house, courtyard and what was an old brick cow shed.

But inside, they make trumpets fit for a Queen.

Richard Smith is one of the founders of the company.

In the 1970s, he wrote a doctoral thesis on trumpet acoustics.

It’s why his fanfare trumpets, based on a design from the 13th century, are so good.

And why a fresh batch will be heard at Harry and Meghan’s wedding.

"Well, it’s really exciting and I’ll be watching the television,” he laughed.

“I haven’t been invited, but I’ll be watching the television.”

Just like at William and Kate’s wedding, and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Smith-Watkins trumpets were front and centre at those events too.

Another Richard, Richard Wright, is the man who crafts them by hand.

“We worked out there’s about 40 separate components in the instrument and I suppose it takes about a week to make all the parts, then assemble it and polish it,” he told me.

The royal trumpets will be embellished with the monarch’s coat of arms, plated in sterling silver, and with the royal banner hanging underneath.

They look the part, and of course sound the part.
