Flying rock strikes Brazilian rally fan in face

A spectator has been struck in the face by a flying rock from a rally car at an event in Brazil.

Footage of the disturbing incident from the Rally de Erechim in southern Brazil earlier this year was captured on video and posted on YouTube four days ago.

It begins with a speeding rally car approaching a corner where motorsport fans are gathered for a close-up view and to take photos.

The driver skilfully navigates a tight turn but in doing so sends dirt and a giant rock flying towards the small group of spectators.

In one frame the rock can be seen hurtling menacingly through the air towards a man leaning forward.

Milliseconds later it strikes him in the face and fellow rally fans rush to his aid.

Spectators at rally car events are continually warned about standing too close to the vehicles and the potential risks of flying debris and even driver crashes.

At the 2015 Rally de Coruna in Spain six spectators were killed when a competitor’s car left the track and smashed into a group of fans.
