Police in Hawaii have reportedly arrested a drug addict over stealing Australian pro-golfer Robert Allenby's credit cards.

Allenby became the centre of a media spotlight last month when in mid-January he claimed he had been kidnapped, bashed and robbed while on a night out in Honolulu.

The golfer was in Hawaii competing on the PGA Tour.

However, reports soon emerged that seemed to contradict his story, when witnesses claimed Allenby had run up a $4300 bill in a strip club and injured himself by falling over.

Honolulu police have reportedly arrested a man accused of spending the money on Allenby's credit cards.

Hawaii News Now has reported 32-year old Patrick Owen Harbison is being held on suspicion of theft but has not yet been accused of kidnapping or assault.

He has been in custody for weeks on unrelated crimes but is now being held for theft.

When allegations about his time at the strip club emerged, Allenby said he had a "blank space" in his memory of the night out.
