Explorer attempting to sail across the Pacific in boat made of reeds

While mankind is pondering a mission to Mars, one adventurer has another expedition in mind, to cross the Pacific Ocean in a boat made of entirely of reeds, and his journey will end in Australia.

American explorer Phil Buck, 51, is putting the final touches on the 18-metre 'Viracocha III' before he departs on the six-month journey which will end in Sydney.

In a bid to show it was possible for the ancient South Americans to make the trip, he will set sail from northern Chile and eat only quinoa, potatoes and fish from the ocean.

"Such a distant journey has never been done before and the goal is to show how far these rustic boats can go," Mr Buck said.

"This type of technology doesn't exist anymore, it's like an art form. I admire these people and their culture."

Unlike the ancient sailors, maritime law stipulates Mr Buck must carry a GPS and navigation system.

He is expected to make several stops along the way including Polynesia, Tahiti and Fiji.

But, if all goes to plan the final destination of the 10,000 nautical mile trip will be Sydney harbour.
