Rebel fighters show devastating impact of roadside IEDs

A deadly roadside IED has obliterated a Turkish military Humvee vehicle in a confronting video reportedly filmed by rebel soldiers near Turkey's border with Syria.

The 2-minute clip, uploaded on Saturday to the YouTube channel of a known Kurdish propaganda unit, shows the terrifying power of the improvised explosive device favoured by modern day guerrilla fighters.

Rebel fighters wait and watch from their vantage point above a two-lane road close to the south eastern Turkish border town of Mardin, claims Gerilla TV.

They let three large military trucks pass by the death trap, before detonating the IED and condemning the Humvee and all its occupants to certain death.

Roadside IEDs, almost impossible to detect, were a constant source of fear for American and Australian ground troops in Afghanistan.

The unconventional weapon was responsible for somewhere between a half to two-thirds of coalition casualties in Afghanistan since 2001, according to Pentagon data.
