Rare 'goblin shark' caught off Florida
Prepare for your nightmares to get a whole lot more terrifying thanks to the capture of a rare "goblin shark" off the coast of Key West in Florida.
Captain Carl Moore caught the elusive creature last month and called the catch the "ugliest" he's ever made.
"When it came up, I didn’t know what it was," Mr Moore told NBC News.
"I didn't measure him because his head was slashing around, and he had some mean-looking teeth and I didn’t want to get caught up in those."
Mr Moore says he ended up releasing the "alien" looking creature back into the water. Research biologist, John Karlson, called Mr Moore's catch "a very rare finding".
"We don't know very much about these animals," he said.
Mr Karlson said the species can range from 3m to 4m, although Mr Moore's goblin shark was around 5m.
Mr Moore reported his sighting to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration after returning to shore, and, from the photograph, Mr Karlson believes it was a female shark.
The last recorded sighting of the shark occurred in 2000, according to Gawker.
