Melting iceberg goes belly-up in water

A sightseer has captured the incredible moment the bottom of a melting iceberg emerged from the ocean as it flipped over.

The lucky tourist, known only as Phil, had his camera at the ready as the iceberg began to flounder, bringing its imposing undercarriage to the water's surface.

Filmed in the heart of Iceberg Alley wedged between the coasts of Labrador and Newfoundland in Canada, Phil's captivated companions coo and gasp as previously-unseen ice from the bottom rises out of the water, creating waves and spray.

While the phenomenon is not uncommon for icebergs, it is rarely captured on video.

Icebergs flip because they become unbalanced as they melt and change shape.

Each year thousands of icebergs make the journey south past Newfoundland and Labrador.

It is reported this ancient ice dates back more than 10,000 years and is one of the world's purest sources of freshwater.
