A man has died after being mown down by a 12-year-old boy racing on the Qatari sand dunes.

Horrifying video show the 42-year-old quad-biker riding on the Al Adaid dune, a popular racing site 60 kilometres south of Doha, moments before the impact last Friday.

The boy, who was allegedly driving the ute, was arrested at the scene.

The boy’s father was also arrested for allowing him to drive unlicensed.

A spectator at the event told The Sun  that deaths are a regular occurrence during the popular winter race.

In the footage, the quad-biker appears to be at fault as he rides across the sand dune in the path of the racing cars.

“The two raptor quad bikes in the video were racing across the runway. It was an incredibly stupid thing to do,” he said.

According to a government source it is unlikely the child will be charged over the death.

The dangerous, unnamed race is popular with people who like to show off their expensive cars and gathers hundreds of spectators during the race season.

It is held every Thursday night and there are no set rules.
