Punching above his weight champ weds his belle

An English man who holds a title for "punching above his weight" has married the woman of his dreams – proving looks count for nothing when it comes to love.

Darren Donaghey, who by his own admission "is no looker", was crowned Punching Above Your Weight Champion in March for pulling his attractive partner of eight years Kate Cathcart.

On Sunday the couple, who have a two-year-old son, tied the knot and will spend two weeks honeymooning in Rhodes, Greece with expenses paid thanks to the competition win.

Sales adviser Mr Donaghey, of Newcastle, said he was forever being ribbed by pals about how he managed to impress his unlikely match.

"For years I've had stick about how I managed to woo Kate and it's not unusual to be out together and other guys innocently start chatting Kate up, thinking that I couldn't possibly be with her," he said.

"Even when we are out shopping at Asda (supermarket) I get these funny looks from blokes and I know what they are thinking."

Full-time mother Ms Cathcart said she was oblivious to all the fuss.

"I love Darren dearly and as most people know, looks aren't everything," she said.
