Prince George gets ready for his first day of kindergarten

The internet is braced for a cuteness-induced meltdown as Prince George dons a school uniform for the first time this week.

The young prince will start school at Thomas’s Battersea in London on Thursday, where fees reportedly cost more than the average Australian car.

"George in a school uniform for the first time will be a photographer's dream, not least if he gives a royal wave and a smile to boot," royal commentator Camilla Tominey said.

As Princess Diana famously walked her son, Prince William, into class for his first day 30 years ago, the Duchess of Cambridge has said she will also be doing the school run.

"If Kate is like any other mother in the land, she'll be the one in tears while George runs off into the playground in the distance!” Ms Tominey said.

While Kensington Palace is situated in the middle of London's fanciest suburbs, Prince William and Kate have chosen a low-key alternative.

"My understanding is they did check out some of the local schools and they attract a lot of celebrities and VIPs - which means they attract a lot of paparazzi,” Ms Rominey said.

“I think Thomas's Battersea is much more low-key and they felt George's privacy would be better protected there."

Famous alumni at the school include model Cara Delevingne and singer Florence Welch.

It is expected in two years’ time, Princess Charlotte will join her brother in the playground.
