A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 has rocked northern Japan.
The quake struck at around 12.25 local time (2.25pm AEDT), southeast of the northern island of Hokkaido.

There has been no tsunami warning issued.
Japanese broadcaster NHK reports the New Chitose Airport, southeast of Sapporo, has been temporarily shut while officials inspect any damage.
