Postcard takes half a century to find the right letterbox

A postcard has arrived at its destination in Wales more than 50 years after it was originally sent, causing great confusion for the current residents.

When the postcard from “Oliver” was sent in 1960, Elvis Presley had just been discharged from the army and New Zealand were turning on their first TV sets.

The journey took the piece of cardboard 55 years, 10 months and 13 days to arrive at its intended destination, which used to be a house but has since been converted into flats.

Welsh couple Yvonne and James Hume were bewildered when they saw the black and white postcard in the letterbox of their Llandudno home on Friday.

"My husband looked at it and said 'No wonder it looks funny it’s been in the post for 50 years'," Yvonne told the Daily Post.

"Talk about snail mail," he said.

The postcard was sent from London and shows famous landmarks of the capital.

Royal Mail spokeswoman Val Bodden told the Daily Post it was unlikely the postcard had been circulating through the mail system for half a century.

"It is difficult to speculate what may have happened, but almost certainly it was put back in a postbox very recently,” she said. 

Now the Humes are keen to track down the intended recipient, a Mrs B H Morgan.
