Plane drags on its belly for 1km during botched landing in West Papua

A plane full of petrol has skidded on an Indonesian runway for a kilometre after the landing gear broke during the landing.

The Trigana Air Service cargo plane dragged on its belly along the tarmac at Wamena Airport in West Papua about 7.30am yesterday.

With no instrument landing equipment and routinely heavy fog, pilots at Wamena Airport have to eyeball their landings.

"They touched down very hard in a nose high attitude which instantly collapsed both main gears," pilot Matt Dearden told CNN.

"The left gear was ripped from the airframe as it skidded along the runway.

"There was an almost identical crash here in Wamena almost exactly a year ago."

Sparks flew from the back of the plane during the botched landing but no fire started.

The pilot, co-pilot and technician all escaped the plane unharmed.
